市街地から約20分。桐生川に沿うように車を上流へ走らせたところに、桐生和紙の小さな工房はあります。清流の里として知られる桐生市梅田は、根本山から流れ出る冷たく清らかな水に恵まれ、林野庁の「水源の森百選」に選ばれています。その清らかな水を生かして古くから紙すきの家が集まる産地でした。
The Umeda area lies along the river Kiryū, its spring water coming from Mount Nemoto and certified as one of “Japan’s 100 Remarkable Waters” by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment. Our workshop in Umeda is located on a mountainside just 20 minutes’ drive from Kiryū center.

原料となる楮（こうぞ）は、桑科の植物です。紙すきには、その皮の部分を用います。まず楮の皮を二昼夜かけて水で戻し、大釜でソーダ灰とともに煮立てた後、硬い部分や細かなごみを手作業で丁寧に根気強く取り除きます。そして、専用の機械を使って繊維を叩いてほぐして、ようやく紙のもととなる紙料ができあがります。
これらのこまかな工程はすべて技術と経験が必要な手作業。紙を漉く作業だけに目がいきがちですが、上質な和紙をつくり続けるには、紙料作りを追求することも欠かせません。その習得の難しさが、紙すき技術の習得には１０年はかかると言われる所以かもしれません。Washi is made from the bark of Kōzo tree (paper mulberry tree) which consists of long, strong, shiny fibers.
The peeled inner bark of the tree is soaked and softened in water for two days then boiled with sodium carbonate in a caldron. After the dust and hard spots are carefully removed, the material is crushed into fine fibers through various steps. Now it is ready for making paper.
Retaining the excellent quality of the washi requires skill and experience during the processing of each individual ingredient, not only the final act of making paper. It is said that it takes about 10 years to master the art of making Japanese paper.
